What happens if I fail or miss a subject at IOE?
If you did not appear in at least one subject of a regular semester exam, you cannot be admitted to a class more than one level above. And if you do not fill the enrolment form for the next part, you are not admitted to it at all.
The booklet calls this khandagat bharna-rokka, semester-wise admission hold. There are two rules and both are about progression rather than about the grade itself.
Rule one: the one-level limit
A student who has not appeared in at least one subject in the regular semester examination of any year and part will not be permitted into a class above the next year and part. You can carry a backlog forward one step. You cannot carry it two.
Rule two: you must enrol for the next part
After sitting the examination of a year and part, you must enrol for the following year and part. A student who does not fill in the form is not admitted to the higher level. This catches people who assume enrolment rolls over automatically while they wait for a result.
Why this compounds
Held progression consumes the completion window. A four-year programme has to be finished within eight academic years and there is no re-examination provision after that, so two or three held years early on narrows the runway considerably.
The practical advice
Sit every paper even when you expect to fail it, because not appearing is what triggers the hold. And file the enrolment form for the next part on time regardless of what you are waiting to hear.
