Campus, hostel and travel

Getting there, living there, and what nobody includes in a fee.

Does a college have to provide hostel and transport?

Nothing in the IOE system obliges a college to move you or house you, which is why these are the costs people forget to compare. IOE’s own 2083 booklet states plainly that arranging daily transport to and from campus is the student’s own responsibility — at every provider in the system, constituent campus or private college alike. No published fee table includes it. Anything a college does provide sits above that baseline rather than inside it, so a hostel place, a mess or a bus is a genuine difference between two colleges and not a formality. Check three things before you commit four years: how you would actually make the journey on an ordinary morning, what the hostel costs and whether food is billed separately from the bed, and whether the address you are reading is current — older listings and mapping services still resolve renamed colleges to their previous location.

This is the shortest section in the library, and deliberately so: there is very little published rule here to report. Nothing in the IOE system obliges a college to house you or move you, which means hostel and transport are not standardised, not comparable from a fee table, and not included in any published cost. That absence of rules is the finding, and it is why these two costs are the ones families discover after they have already committed.

Which answer you need

Because none of this is required, anything a college does provide sits above the baseline rather than inside it — which makes a hostel place, a mess arrangement or a bus route a genuine point of difference between two colleges rather than a formality to skim past. Three things are worth checking before four years are committed: how the journey actually works on an ordinary morning rather than in principle, whether food is billed separately from the bed, and whether the address you are navigating to is the current one.
