Kathmandu's Nagdhunga tunnel opens to private cars on a free trial
Cars, jeeps and vans now use Nepal's first modern road tunnel, one-way at first, with hours and vehicle classes to widen after review.
For you: A road tunnel is a full systems project, not only excavation. Ventilation, fire detection, lighting, CCTV, traffic control and toll systems all need electrical, electronic and software engineers, while the structure and escape tunnel are civil work. Nepal now has a working reference for later tunnels such as the Kathmandu-Terai fast track tunnels. Students can see why commissioning is staged: operators test systems with low traffic first before trusting them with full loads.
