Which engineering programmes does Kathmandu University run, and which colleges are affiliated to it?

Ten engineering-side bachelor programmes at the School of Engineering in Dhulikhel, plus Environmental Engineering, which two KU documents file under different schools. The Nepal Engineering Council registers no KU-affiliated engineering college; the nine "affiliated colleges" KU names teach Information Technology.

Kathmandu University runs its engineering degrees itself, on one campus, and affiliates no engineering college. The Nepal Engineering Council’s register lists two KU entries, both at Dhulikhel in Kavre: the School of Engineering, with eight programmes first approved on 2061-08-24, and the School of Science, with one, approved 2063-04-22. Every other university in the census has private colleges under it; KU has none for engineering. The 2026 admission call lists the School of Engineering’s bachelor programmes as Civil, Computer, Mechanical, Chemical, Mining, Geomatics, Electrical and Electronics in a Communication track and a Power and Control track, Architecture, a BTech in Artificial Intelligence, Environmental Engineering, Health Informatics and Information Technology. The last two are the exceptions: Health Informatics admits without the KUCAT-CBT through its own department, and Information Technology is taught only at nine affiliated colleges from Biratnagar to Dhangadhi, none of which the regulator registers as an engineering college. So a list headed "Kathmandu University engineering colleges" is listing something the register does not contain.

The programmes, and the one the documents place differently

Environmental Engineering is the one to watch. The 2026 call lists it under "Programs offered by SoE"; the university’s 2082/83 fee structure files it under the School of Science, and NEC’s register gives the School of Science exactly one engineering programme, which fits the fee structure’s placement. The documents disagree, and this page reports both rather than choosing. The fee structure also carries a "Bachelor in Heritage Conservation" under the School of Engineering that the 2026 call does not offer.

The only published intake: Geomatics, 60 seats

Kathmandu University does not publish a seat matrix for its engineering programmes in any document read for this page. The one exception is Geomatics Engineering, which runs under a memorandum with the Land Management Training Centre of the Ministry of Land Management, and whose scholarship information sheet prints the intake in full: 60 seats.

Fifty-four of the sixty seats are therefore allocated by province or by category before open merit is reached, and the scholarship is awarded on KUCAT rank within each province. The programme-wise notice confirms the order: Geomatics fills its scholarship quotas first and publishes the remaining seats on merit.

Where Information Technology is actually taught

The first admission notice of 4 August 2026 names the affiliated colleges for the two programmes KU does not teach at Dhulikhel, and says document verification and admission for them is done by the college. For the Bachelor of Information Technology: Aspire College and New Everest College in Biratnagar; White House College of Business and Technology in Birtamod; South City College of Science and Technology in Birgunj; Radiant College in Tilottama; Ashoka College of Engineering and Management and Prativa Business School in Pokhara; Nepal Western Academy in Dhangadhi; and Nagrik Institute of Technology College in Gaidakot. For Health Informatics: Aspire College, Biratnagar. Three of those are also KUCAT-CBT test centres.

Recognition and accreditation

The School of Engineering holds NEC recognition from 2061-08-24. On the University Grants Commission’s quality accreditation register it was accredited on 22 May 2013 for five years, to 21 May 2018, and the register shows no renewal since. That makes it one of four engineering institutions in Nepal whose UGC accreditation has lapsed, and the oldest lapse of the four. UGC records its establishment as 2050 BS; the school’s own site states no founding year.
