Nepal GPA calculator

GPA to percentage on the NEB scale, a SEE or +2 result from its subject grades, and a credit-weighted semester SGPA. With the mark range each grade really stands for, because no board publishes a conversion.

What are you working out

Type in either box. The other follows, using the GPA × 25 convention that consultancies and admission offices use.

Scale usedNEB Letter Grading Directive 2078. No board in Nepal publishes an official GPA-to-percentage scale — GPA × 25 is a convention, so the mark range the grade actually covers is shown beside it.

A percentage from a GPA is an estimate, always.A grade band covers ten marks, so converting back to a single percentage throws information away that cannot be recovered. Where a university or an embassy asks for a percentage, most now accept the GPA and the official scale instead — send the marksheet.

Pass rules are deliberately not encoded here. NEB's theory minimum, TU's semester bylaw and each institute's own rules differ and have changed more than once; the arithmetic on this page is the part that does not.

The conversion everybody uses, and nobody published

Multiply a GPA by 25 and you get the percentage every Nepali consultancy form expects. It comes from the arithmetic of the scale: 4.0 is the maximum and 100 is the maximum, so one grade point is worth 25 marks.

What no board has ever published is a rule saying that is the conversion. The National Examination Board grades in eight bands, and each band is a range of marks — a B+ is anything from 70 to 80. So a 3.2 GPA does not mean 80%; it means the marks were somewhere in that ten-point band. This page prints the range next to the single figure for exactly that reason.

NEB averages subjects, TU weights credits

A SEE or +2 GPA is the plain average of the subject grade points. A university semester result is not: each course counts in proportion to its credit hours, so a four-credit course moves the average twice as far as a two-credit one.

SGPA is Σ(credit × grade point) ÷ Σ(credits) for one semester. A CGPA is the same arithmetic run across every semester, which you can do in the semester mode above by entering each semester as one row: its SGPA as the grade and its total credits as the credit hours.

An NG is not a missing subject

Below 35% in theory the NEB records NG, worth 0.0. It still counts in the divisor. Averaging only the subjects you passed produces a number that looks like a result and is not one, and it is the commonest error in a hand-calculated GPA.

TU's own classification bands

  • Distinction3.30 and above
  • First division2.30 and above
  • Second division1.30 and above
  • Pass1.00 and above

These are the university's bands for a semester or cumulative average. Individual faculties set their own pass rules on top of them, and the Institute of Engineering has historically run its own examination rules — check your campus notice rather than this table.

Taking this result to an engineering admission?

Nepali engineering entrance is ranked on the entrance examination rather than on your +2 GPA, but the GPA still decides eligibility and, at ICE, what scholarship you are considered for. The fees and scholarships page sets out how an aggregate is used, and admissions covers the eligibility floor.

Common questions

Is this Nepal GPA calculator page free to use?
Yes. Every Kaamko tool is free, with no sign-up, no account and no usage limit. They are published by Imperial College of Engineering, a Tribhuvan University-affiliated engineering college in Tathali, Bhaktapur, and are not funded by advertising.
Does what I type get sent anywhere?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser: the calculation happens on your own device, nothing you type is uploaded, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
Where do the figures come from?
Each tool names its source on the page, along with the date that source was read. Where a rate or a slab is provisional — announced in a budget speech but not yet gazetted, for instance — the page says so rather than presenting it as settled.
Who maintains these tools?
Imperial College of Engineering, formerly Janakpur Engineering College, in Tathali, Bhaktapur, Nepal. Corrections are welcome by phone on 01-5091616 or through the contact page, and a figure reported as wrong is checked against its published source rather than adjusted on request.
