About Typing Race

Typing Race is a typing speed test that works in English and in Nepali Unicode. Each round gives you a short passage of our own sentences: in English about engineering, bridges, circuits and Nepal, and in Nepali simple everyday lines. You type into the box, the passage turns green as you get it right and red where you slip, and a runner on the track moves with you. Once you have a best score, a second runner moves at that speed, so every round is a race against yourself.

Nothing leaves your device. Your best words per minute for each language is kept in this browser, and pasting is switched off so the numbers stay honest.

How to play Typing Race

1. Pick English or Nepali. For Nepali you need a Nepali Unicode keyboard on your computer or phone, such as the Romanized or Traditional layout.
2. Click the box and start typing. The clock starts on your first key.
3. Fix a mistake with Backspace before you go on; the round only ends when the whole passage is right.
4. When you finish, read your WPM, CPM and accuracy, then check the error map for the keys that cost you most.
5. Press New passage to race again with new sentences.

How the numbers are counted

CPM is correct characters per minute. In English, WPM is CPM divided by five, the usual convention for typing tests. In Nepali, WPM counts whole words you finished correctly, because the five-character rule does not fit Devanagari. A Nepali character here means what you see as one letter, such as कि or को, even though it is made of several Unicode code points; the game uses the browser's grapheme segmenter to count them the way a reader would. Accuracy is the share of characters you got right the first time.

Typing Nepali in Unicode

Older Nepali documents are often in the Preeti font, which looks like Nepali but stores English letters underneath. If you have text like that, convert it with our Preeti to Unicode tool before you use it anywhere online. Practising here on a Unicode keyboard is the quickest way to stop depending on Preeti for forms, emails and applications.
